Mariners improve behind youngsters
Number of high points mark 2006, despite last-place finish

With a new starting pitcher (Jarrod Washburn) and catcher (Kenji Johjima)
in tow, Seattle entered 2006 with the hopes of climbing out of the cellar
in the American League West.
在2006年開季,水手對新增了Washburn與日籍捕手 Johjima,並期望能夠從美西的谷底爬起。

That didn't happen, though the Mariners contended for the division title up
until August and showed a nine-game improvement from 2005, and did so with a roster that relied on several young players like pitcher Felix Hernandez, shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt and second baseman Jose Lopez.

The Mariners feasted on the National League West in Interleague Play, going 18-8,
but struggled mightily against their AL West brethren, going 19-38 against the
A's, Angels and Rangers, including an 0-11 divisional road trip that saw them
go from 5 1/2 games back to 14 by the time the trip was over.

The year did produce a number of highs. Lopez made the All-Star team in his first
full season in the Major Leagues. Ichiro Suzuki eclipsed the 200-hit mark for the
sixth time and won his sixth Gold Glove as well. Johjima acclimated himself
quickly, hitting 18 home runs and providing stability to a position that was
missing in 2005.

The Mariners' bullpen proved to be one of the best in the league, especially at
the back end where setup man Rafael Soriano (1-2, 2.25 ERA) and J.J. Putz
(36 saves) gave the Mariners a strong 1-2 combination in the eighth and ninth

In September, the Mariners announced they would retain manager Mike Hargrove
for the third year of his three-year contract and that general manager Bill Bavasi
would return as well.

"I believe in what we're doing, in the direction we're going," Hargrove said.
"I believe in what our front office is doing, and I have every confidence that
we'll get this turned around."

Japanese catcher Johjima was introduced to the Seattle media on Jan. 24, at a

they had any "questions in Japanese.

the number of innings Hernandez would throw in 2007.

game against the Padres, striking out the first three hitters he faced (Dave

hitless innings against the Padres.
Seattle received some good news when it was discovered that Jeremy Reed's
right wrist -- which was originally diagnosed as being broken -- wasn't broken
after all, meaning that he would be ready for Opening Day.

Johjima hit a home run in his first Major League game, but the Mariners fell to
the Angels, 5-4, on Opening Day.
On April 13, the Mariners overcame a four-run deficit for a 9-5 victory over the
Indians as Seattle's bullpen combined for 4 1/3 scoreless innings.
On April 26, Washburn picked up his second victory of the year by holding the
White Sox to one run on four hits over 6 2/3 innings in a 5-1 victory. Jose Lopez
had the big hit, a two-run single in the second inning.

Seattle starter Joel Pineiro was named the American League's Player of the Week
for winning consecutive starts against Cleveland and Minnesota. Pineiro didn't
walk a batter in 17 combined innings over those two starts.
On May 14, the Mariners hit four home runs in a 9-4 victory over the Angels in
Anaheim. Raul Ibanez, Carl Everett, Lopez and Betancourt each hit home runs.
In a game featuring two of the top young pitchers in baseball, Minnesota's
Francisco Liriano outdueled Hernandez in the Twins' 3-1 victory on May 26.

team. Lopez was selected to replace New York's Robinson Cano, who was injured.
On July 22, Hernandez retired 13 of the final 14 batters he faced in a 5-2
victory over the Boston Red Sox at Safeco Field.
A day later, Richie Sexson hit a walk-off home run in the ninth inning to
lift Seattle to a 9-8 victory over the Red Sox.

Washburn helped Seattle complete a three-game sweep of the Devil Rays on
Aug. 9, holding Tampa Bay hitless over the first five innings in a 2-0 victory.
Beltre hit two home runs -- the second, a walk-off home run in the ninth
inning -- to lift Seattle to a 6-5 victory over the Yankees. The victory
ended the Mariners' 11-game losing streak.
Hernandez tossed his first complete-game shutout on Aug. 28 as the Mariners
defeated the Angels, 2-0. Hernandez got 16 ground-ball outs in a game that
took just one hour and 51 minutes to play.

2007 season on Oct. 19. McLaren replaced Ron Hassey, who was fired in September.
McLaren was on the Mariners' staff from 1993 to 2003 under then-manager Lou Piniella.

The Mariners started to address their offseason needs by signing veteran right
fielder Jose Guillen to a one-year deal on the first day of the Winter Meetings
in Orlando.

pitcher Horacio Ramirez.
